Westchester Public Works Department handles all branch pick up, repair of parkways damaged by water and sewer repairs, painting of curbs and fire hydrants and maintenance of lawns around the Village buildings. For branch pick up, the Village is divided into four sections and each section is picked weekly. Annually, the Village paints approximately 66,000 linear feet of curbs and 140 fire hydrants.

Residents with parkway trees in need of trimming can contact Public Works at 345-0041 to be placed on a waiting list. The Village also offers a shared-cost sidewalk program and tree replacement program. To sign up for these programs, visit the Village’s website at www.westchester-il.com. In late fall, PW distributes leaf bags. Each single family residence is entitled to 10 free bags. Additional bags may be purchased for a nominal fee.

During summer months, the Street Department lays over 300 tons of asphalt as part of patching and repair programs. The department also has an aggressive crack filling program to prolong the useful life of the streets. In winter months, crews plow more than 3,000 miles of street and can spread as much as 2,000 tons of salt to keep streets safe and dry. The Street Department is also responsible for the maintenance of all village vehicles and for street sweeping. They also assist in the set-up and operation of the 4th of July Parade, Fest and annual Veterun.

Westchester’s Water and Sewer Department maintains all water and sewer lines. An ongoing sewer maintenance program consists of jetting and televising all of the lines. Residents experiencing sewer breakups or observing unusual amounts of water on the street/parkway should contact the Water Department or, after normal business hours, contact the Police Department non-emergency number.

The Water Department oversees the Mayfair Reservoir; residents are asked to “adopt a hydrant” in the winter, keeping them clear of snow and ice. The Village operates the Crestwood Pumping Station and elevated water tower. Chief water operator Brian Clawson tests the water monthly to make certain it is of the highest quality.

All meters are read four times a year. Residents are urged to check the reader on the outside of their homes to make sure that it corresponds with the reader on the meter inside their homes. If there is a discrepancy, contact the Village immediately. If you have a large water bill, please check your toilets! Toilets are the number one cause of water loss.
