In the 1950’s, residents of Westchester
petitioned the Village to place a library service
tax on the next village election ballot and on
February 25, 1956 Westchester
voters approved a library tax
and elected the Library’s first
board of trustees: Dr. Harold R.
Voorhees, Mrs. Rita McKillip,
Mr. Robert S. Auten, Dr. Russell
Zitek, Mrs. Virginia Boyle and Mr. Thomas J.
Harvey.
The Library originally occupied 3,200 square
feet in the Village Hall. In 1965, the Library
moved to its present site on Canterbury Street.
Nestled in a residential neighborhood, the
Library offers patrons a vibrant collection of new
and noteworthy books, films and music CDs in
comfortable surroundings, including off-street
parking. Computer workstations with internet
access are available in both the adult and youth
departments, bringing the world to our patrons
and giving our patrons access, literally, to the
world of information.Westchester Public Library
is also part of the SWAN online catalog, giving patrons access to library collections in over 78 public libraries in the
western and southern suburbs of Chicago.
For the latest news and events at the Library, to see what
materials we have in our collection and to access our subscription

New residents can apply for a Library card by presenting two
forms of identification showing your Westchester address (driver’s
license, utility bill, etc.).
